Many things we do today are done through excellent planning by well trained human minds.
This in itself is not a bad thing…we should plan to do things well. And the better the planning, or forethought, usually ensures success.
Then there are somethings that we should seek God for. After all, He is the Creator of all things. Consider the stars, a flower, DNA, mankind and the complexities the human mind… that is trained and does the excellent planning!
I love the early church. Their primary focus was to worship and fast.
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Acts 13:2
They prepared themselves to be open to God.
Worship was their focus on God. Fasting denied them of worldly distraction and fine tuned their attentiveness to hearing from God. Then, the Holy Spirit spoke.
They weren’t looking for a mission’s trip or presenting their plans to God and asking for directions. They simply worship, fasted and listened to what the Holy Spirit said. And then did what they were asked to do.
I’m sure they would never had come up with the idea to go where they eventually went or to do the things they did by themselves. If they had their way they would probably have stayed in Jerusalem and did good things there.
We can all do good things. But is it what God wants?
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Eph 2:10
Maybe, just maybe, we should take a leaf from the early believer’s book and take some time to worship and fast… who knows what God has in store for us!
